Glasgow Boys (Scottish artists' group, active late 19th century)
|
Note: Refers to a loose group of Scottish artists mainly active in Glasgow in the late 19th century. The group rejected academic taste and the strictures of the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Naturalism, scenes of everyday life, strong color, and a more painterly approach were important aspects of the work of the Glasgow Boys. They were influenced by French Realism, particularly that of Millet and of the Barbizon School. There were three distinct groups within the Glasgow Boys. In 1885 all three came together in the annual exhibition of the Glasgow Institute. |
