Verelst family (Dutch artists, active 17th-18th centuries)

Note: Dutch family of artists. Pieter Verelst was a pupil of Gerrit Dou, and his two sons, Harmen and Simon, became established painters in London. Harmen was most well-known for his portraits, and Simon for his flower paintings. Simon's daughter Maria was a respected painter in London, under the tutelage of her father and uncle, as well as teacher of languages. Hamen's son Cornelis was the father of Willem Verelst, regarded as the most accomplished portrait painter of the family, producing several life-sized works, as well as many three-quarter-length portraits of women.
