Note: The city of Yerevan was formed in 783 BCE, although the area had been settled several thousand years previous. Located on an ancient crossroads of caravan routes along the Razdan River, Yerevan was annexed to the Armenian kingdom in the 6th century BCE. Due to the city's strategic location, it has been conquered at various turns by, among others, the Romans, Mongols, Arabs, Persians and the Russians, under whom the city became the capital of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1920. Under the Soviets, Yerevan became the modern, industrial center of the country. It remained the capital when Armenia became independent in 1991.
