Note: Village known as the site of a World War II Nazi concentration camp. The camp was established just outside the village in 1939 as a prisoner of war camp, but by 1942, it became a full concentration camp. In 1944, the camp became an extermination camp. Over 60,000 people were killed at the Stutthof camp during its existence. In January of 1945, in advance of approaching Soviet forces, the SS forced 50,000 prisoners, mainly Jews, on a "death march" in which nearly half were either killed by the SS, or died from exhaustion. When the Soviets arrived at the camp in May of 1945, they found only about 100 survivors. A museum and memorial now exists on the original site.
