Note: Four British-protected states on the Malaysian peninsula: Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, and Pahang. The federation was in existence from 1895 until the Japanese occupation during World War II. The Federated Malay States joined with the Unfederated Malay States, along with the Straits Settlements, to eventually become present-day Malaysia.
