Note: Ancient former county in southeastern England centered around River Thames. It was bounded by the Thames to the south and by its tributaries the Lea to the east and the Colne to the west; to the north was Hertfordshire. In 1965 it was divided between Hertfordshire, Surrey, and Greater London, with most being incorporated into Greater London. The area was inhabited by traders and settlers since Iron Age ca. 500 BCE, Saxons and Romans; population has been declining since late 19th century. |
