Note: The independent city of Frederiksberg was founded by Frederick III in 1651as a settlement for Dutch immigrants brought to nearby Amager Island. It received its charter in 1857 and remained a separately administered municipality, although it was physically encircled by Copenhagen in the early 20th century. Today is noted for the Copenhagen Zoo, the Danish national broadcasting system, the Royal Verterinary and Agricultural University founded in 1856, and the Military Academy located in the 18th-century Frederiksberg Castle. Its industries include the Royal Porcelain Factory, the Carlsberg breweries, and a cable- and wireworks. The 1982 estimated population was 88,047.
