Note: The town of Viborg is the seat of the county commune of Viborg in north-central Jutland, Denmark. It was originally a center of pagan worship. The early royal capital of Jutland, legend states that King Canute set out to conquer England from here. The kings of Denmark were consecrated here from 1027 onward, and the first Danish coins were struck here in the 11th century. A bishopric from 1065, it received its first charter in the 12th century, which was revived in 1440m whereupon it was the largest town in Jutland. It flourished from the 15th to the 17th century, after which it declined due to fires and competition with the new capital of Copenhagen. After the surrounding heath lands were reclaimed in 1866, the town's fortunes revived. Its historic architecture includes a 12-century cathedral restored in 1864-1876, two medieval churches, the Baroque town hall dating from 1728, and the Bishop's Palace, also built in 1728. The modern town is a commercial and manufacturing center, producing, tobacco, beer, machinery, and textiles. The 2004 estimated population was 33,200.
