The settlement was founded in 1321 to protect the Danish frontier, forming around the 1248 royal castle. It is noted for the 13th-century church of St. Nicholas, damaged by fire in 1808 but now partly restored; it is one of the oldest churches in Denmark. The modern town is a railway and export center with industries including the manufacture of textiles, cement, and machinery, and shipbuilding. The 2004 population estimate was 54,400. |
