Note: City located on the frontier of Afghanistan, on the Amu Darya river. The ancient settlement of Termez flourished in the 1st century BCE, and was destroyed in the 17th century CE. Present-day Termez began as a Russian fort in the late 19th century and its industries include food processing and cotton. Several ancient ruins still exist, which include a Buddhist monastary, forts and mausoleums.
