Note: Marghilon, located in eastern Uzbekistan, dates from the 2nd-1st centuries BCE. A commercial town in the 10th-12 centuries CE, it grew to become one of the largest cities in the region. Marghilon became part of the khanate of Kokand, and was captured by the Russians in 1876. Today it is the center of Uzbekistan's silk industry.
