Note: City in eastern Uzbekistan, resting at the foot of the Alay Mountains in the southern portion of the Fergana Valley. Fergana was formed in 1877 by the Russians, who made it the administrative center of the Fergana province. It became part of Turkestan A.S.S.R. in 1918, and part of the Uzbek S.S.R. in 1924. Local industries include silk, cotton, oil and chemicals. |
