Note: Town on the Danube River, notorius for being the location of a Nazi concentration camp of the same name, situated next to an abandoned stone quarry near the village. Established in 1938 and built with slave labor, the camp primarily housed political prisoners, "anti-Nazis," criminals, and some Jews, until 1944, when Jews in large numbers were sent to Mauthausen from Hungary and Poland. Mauthausen was one of the most notorious of all concentration camps, with prisoners routinely being starved, beaten, used for medical experiments, forced into brutal labor, and gassed. Approximately 119,400 people died at Mauthausen. The camp was liberated in May of 1945. |
