Note: County Galway consists of bogs, heath land and coastal uplands. It is named after the Gallic descendants of the followers of Norman baron Richard de Burgh, who assumed rule of the area in the 1230s.It has largest Gaelic-speaking population of Ireland's counties. Most of its inhabited places are small towns, with the lone exception of the capital and seaport of Galway town, the largest in the county. Industries include farming, notably the raising of sheep, cotton spinning, boot making, sugar refining, and the marble quarrying, especially of the green-streaked Connemara marble. |
