Note: Located in northern Samaria, central Palestine. It has long been the chief marketing center of northern Samaria, in an agricultural area that produces wheat, olives, dates, carobs, and figs. The original ancient settlement is mentioned in the Amarna Letters, which are 14th-century-BC diplomatic documents found at Tell el-Amarna, Egypt. It is often identified as the biblical city of En-gannim of the Levites. In the Middle Ages the town was taken by the crusaders. It was a Turkish-German base in World War I, a center for Jordanian and Iraqi forces in 1948, and since then it was the northern apex of "the triangle" (Janin, T ul Karm, Nabulus), which has been a staging area for Arab guerrilla activity against Israel.
