Note: Sumqayıt was founded in 1944 as a suburb of Azerbaijan's capital, Baku. Within five years it acheived city status. The city is a major center for production of oil equipment, aluminum, fertilizer, and detergents. Sumqayıt is located at the mouth of the Sumqayit River, on the Caspian Sea.
