Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians (HBMI). The reservation spans approximately 800 acres in Aroostook County, Maine. In the early 1970s, a group Maliseet people and members of other tribes not living on recognized reservations banded together to form the Association of Aroostook Indians, which allowed them access to federal and state programs. Subsequently, the HBMI was federally recognized and the reservation was created for tribal use in October 1980.
