Note: Medieval deer park and outstanding 18th-century Georgian gardens. The water gardens were begun by John Aislabie (died 1742) and completed by his son John who also bought, and later landscaped, the estate of the adjacent Fountains Abbey in 1767. The gardens are noted for their temples, follies, and statues. Together with the abbey the gardens form a 822 acre World Heritage site (since 1987) and National Trust site (since 1983). The Victorian St. Mary's church is also at the site. Located on the River Skell. |
