Note: Santiago de Compostela was the primary site of pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home to the shrine of Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The town was ruined by Moorish troops in 997 and was restored with a new cathedral and hospital for pilgrims. |
