Note: The city of Hameln lies on the Weser River southwest of the city of Hanover in Lower Saxony. It was an ancient Saxon settlement. The Abbey of St. Boniface was founded there in the late 8th century and the town grew up around it. Receiving its charter around 1200, it became the possession of the duchy of Brunswick around 1259 and later joined the Hanseatic League. In legend it is the site of the rat-catcher Pied Piper's story, which was perhaps based on the exodus of young men colonizing the east, or on Nicholas of Köln leading thousands of children on the tragic Children's Crusade in 1212. Hameln attracts many tourists, situated as it is at the center of the Lower Weser Highlands scenic area and nature park. It has a river port and railway junction, and local industries including food processing and the production of chemicals, carpets, and machinery. Its 2004 estimated population was 59,200. |
