Note: Erlangen is a city in Bavaria in the south of Germany, situated north of Nürnberg at the confluence of the Schwabach and Regnitz Rivers. The site was settled in the eighth century, and ruled first by the Bishop of Würzberg, then by the Bishop of Bamberg from 1017. It was sold to the prince of Bohemia in1361, received its town charter in 1398, then came under the rule of Nürnberg in 1402. It prospered with the arrival of French Huguenot refugees who settled in "Christian Erlang" in 1686. It passed to Bavaria in 1810. Historic buildings include the palace, built 1700-1704, and the town hall dating from 1731. The city still produces hats, drapery, and gloves, crafts introduced by the Huguenot settler. The production of electrical equipment is the major modern industry. It is also the home of the Friedrich-Alexander Univeristy of Erlangen-Nürnberg. The 2004 estimated population was 99,800. |
