Note: Site of kingdoms from early Vedic period (began ca. 1500 BCE). The region was conquered by Muslims in 1194, and later annexed to Delhi ca. 1497. Later, the area was part of Bengal under British rule until the provinces of Bihār and Orissa created in 1912. Bihār was a separate province by 1936, and the borders redrawn in 1956. In 2000, the State of Jharkhand was carved out of the southern part of the State. |
