Note: Documented in history, but the location of Pi-Ramesses was long lost; it was misidentified as being in Tanis because statues and inscriptions from Pi-Ramesses were found in Tanis. It is now understood that in ancient times the items from Pi-Ramesses had been moved to Tanis when the course of the Nile changed and the port was moved to Tanis. The city was the new capital built by the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279-1213 BCE). It had earler been the site of a summer palace under Seti I (ca. 1290-1279 BCE); perhaps originally founded by Ramesses I (ca. 1292-1290 BCE). |
