Note: The Gulf of Bothnia is the northern arm of the Baltic Sea between Sweden to the west and Finland to the east. It covers about 45,200 square miles in surface area and stretches 450 miles from north to south, and from around 50 to 150 miles east to west. At its southern end are clustered the Åland Islands. It is almost tideless, and reaches a depth of 817 feet. The salinity is low, allowing the northern portion to freeze over for about five months every winter. The major ports on its coast are Luleå, Härnösand, Sundsvall, and Gävle in Sweden, and Pori, Vaasa, and Oulu in Finland. |
