Note: Structures at the Zempoala site date from the Late Postclassic period (ca. 1200-1521 CE), but ceramics excavated from the site show the site had been inhabited since the Late Preclassic period (ca. 300-250 CE). Was the largest city on the Gulf of Mexico, with population of around 30,000. It was the capital of the kingdom of Totonacapan occupied by the Totonac people. When Spanish arrived, the city was under Aztec domination. Village with the same name is nearby. Was an Aztec town.
