Note: Family containing around 2,600 species of flowering plant, most native to the tropical New World and the West Indies. Most have fleshy fruit, but some produce dry pods. Bromeliads are one of the more recent plant groups to have emerged. The greatest number of primitive species reside in the Andean highlands of South America, where they originated. |

Dutch ..... Familie van ongeveer 2600 soorten bloeiende planten, de meeste inheems in de tropische gebieden in de Nieuwe Wereld en West-Indiƫ. De meeste hebben vlezige vruchten, maar sommigen produceren droge peulen. In de evolutie vormen bromelia's een van de jongere plantengroepen. De oudste soorten vindt men voornamelijk in het Andesgebergte. In dat gebied zijn ze ook ontstaan. |
