Note: Scripts used for writing by the Syriac Christians from the 1st century ad until about the 14th century. Using a Semitic alphabet, it is descendent Aramaic cursive with 22 letters, all representing consonants, and was typically written from right to left, although occasionally vertically downward. Diacritical marks used to represent vowels were introduced in the 8th century and two systems of vocalization were developed, one similar to the system in Arabic, and one using small Greek letters above or below the line.

| Dutch ..... Schriften die werden gebruikt door Syrische christenen vanaf de 1e tot ongeveer de 14e eeuw. Het schrift maakt gebruik van een Semitisch alfabet en stamt af van Aramees cursiefschrift. Het heeft 22 letters, allemaal medeklinkers, en werd meestal van rechts naar links geschreven, maar soms ook verticaal van boven naar beneden. Diakritische tekens voor klinkers werden in de 8e eeuw ingevoerd en er werden twee systemen van vocalisatie ontwikkeld, het ene gelijkend op het systeem in het Arabisch en het andere met kleine Griekse letters boven of onder de regel. |
