Note: A broad class of chordophones consisting of a string bearer, typically a soundboard, one or more strings, and no neck. Although this whole class is sometimes referred to as zithers, use "zithers" only for the particular modern plucked chordophones developed in the Alpine region of Europe.

Hoewel de hele categorie soms wel met citers wordt aangeduid, wordt de term 'citers' alleen gebruikt voor bepaalde moderne, getokkelde chordofonen die in de Alpen zijn ontwikkeld. |
| German ..... Umfassende Klasse von Chordofonen mit einem Saitenträger, typischerweise ein Resonanzkörper, einen oder mehreren Saiten und ohne Hals. Aunque a toda esta clase de instrumentos a veces se la denomina como cítaras, úsese "cítaras” sólo para los modernos cordófonos especiales de cuerdas pulsadas desarrollados en la región Alpina de Europa. |
