Note: Carved ‘serpent stones’ commissioned by Indian women that evoke symbolic properties of the tree and the serpent. These are set beneath sacred trees, and are thought to bestow fertility, especially to the barren. Stone or terracotta nāgakals bearing Shaivite or Vaishnavite symbolism may be found side by side under the same tree-shrine. Most often these are carved by local craftsmen. |

Dutch ..... Beeldgesneden 'slangenstenen' voor Indiase vrouwen, waarin symbolische eigenschappen van de boom en de slang worden gesuggereerd. Ze worden aan de voet van heilige bomen geplaatst en zouden voor vruchtbaarheid zorgen, in het bijzonder bij onvruchtbare vrouwen. Stenen of terracotta nagakals met shaivistische of vaishnavistische symbolen kunnen naast elkaar in hetzelfde boomheiligdom worden aangetroffen. Meestal worden ze door lokale ambachtslieden gesneden. |
Portuguese ..... Pedras de serpentes esculpidas e encomendadas por mulheres da Índia que evocam propriedades simbólicas da árvore e da serpente. Elas são colocadas sob árvores sagradas e acredita-se que concedem fertilidade, especialmente para estéreis. Nagakals em pedra ou terracota trazem simbolismo Shaivite ou Vaishnavite que podem ser encontrados lado a lado sob o mesmo santuário de árvore. Geralmente, elas são esculpidas por artesãos locais. |
