Note: Sculpted figures of the Senufo people of Africa. They are mostly of women, though men, couples, and equestrian figures are also known, and all have thick, heavy bases. Using them in various ceremonial contexts such as funerary rites and Iô society initiations, participants grasp the figures by their arms and rhythmically pound the ground with them. |

Dutch ..... Gebeeldhouwde figuren van het Afrikaanse Senufovolk. Het zijn meestal beelden van vrouwen, maar ook mannen, paren en ruiters zijn bekend. Alle figuren hebben een dik, zwaar voetstuk. Ze worden gebruikt in verschillende ceremoniële contexten zoals begrafenis- en initiatierituelen van de Iô-gemeenschap waarbij de deelnemers de beeldjes bij hun armen nemen en er ritmisch mee op de grond stampen. |
German ..... Figürliche Skulptur der Senufo in Afrika. Es handelt sich meistens um Frauen, nachgewiesen sind aber auch Männer, Paare oder Reiterfiguren, immer mit einer dicken und schweren Basis. Sie werden in verschiedenen zeremoniellen Kontexten verwendet, wie bei Beerdigungsriten und in der Iô-Gesellschaft, wobei die Teilnehmer die Figur an ihren Armen fassen und sie rhythmisch auf den Boden schlagen. |

Spanish ..... Figuras esculpidas del pueblo Senufo de África. Son principalmente de mujeres, sin embargo figuras de hombres, parejas y figuras equestres son también conocidas, y todas tienen bases gruesas y pesadas. Se usan en varios contextos ceremoniales tal como ritos funerarios e iniciaciones en la sociedad Iô, los participantes agarran las figuras con sus brazos y rítmicamente golpean el suelo con ellas. |
