Note: Refers to art styles that were a reaction against the traditional European conception of art as the imitation of nature. In the strictest sense, the term refers to 20th-century Western painting, sculpture, or graphic art having subject matter that does not include forms that represent objects from the visible world. For the general concept of art in which natural forms are only simplified or changed in their representation, but not eliminated entirely, use "abstract (general art genre)." For the process of formulating general concepts by abstracting common properties of instances, use "abstraction."

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar kunststijlen die ontstonden als reactie op de traditionele Europese opvatting volgens welke de kunst wordt geacht de natuur te imiteren. In zijn meest strikte vorm verwijst de term naar 20ste-eeuwse westerse schilderkunst, beeldhouwkunst of grafische kunst waarvan de vormentaal in geen enkel opzicht verwijst naar objecten uit de zichtbare wereld. De term wordt ook wel toegepast op kunst waarin natuurlijke vormen op vereenvoudigde of veranderde wijze worden weergegeven, maar waarin deze vormen niet volledig zijn uitgebannen. Gebruik 'abstractie' voor het proces waarbij algemene begrippen worden geformuleerd door middel van abstrahering van gemeenschappelijke kenmerken van zaken. |
