Note: Structures of any material having a plan consisting of a number of intercommunicating passages arranged in bewildering complexity, through which it is difficult or impossible to find one's way without guidance. The term was derived from structures so-named in classical Antiquity, perhaps derived from "labrys" (Greek for "double axe" or "place of the double axes"), because the structures were labeled with the sign of a double-axe. The earliest use of the term is usually associated with the mythical labyrinth at Knossos, Crete, in which Theseus killed the Minotaur. |

Dutch ..... Constructies met een aantal onderling verbonden gangen die een zeer complex patroon vormen, waardoor het moeilijk is om de uitgang te vinden. Ze gaan terug op de klassieke oudheid. De term is mogelijk afgeleid van ���labrys', Grieks voor ���dubbele bijl' of ���plaats van dubbele bijlen', omdat labyrinten werden aangegeven met een teken in de vorm van een dubbele bijl. Men gaat ervan uit dat de term voor het eerst werd gebruikt voor het mythische labyrint van Knossos op Kreta, waar Theseus de Minotaurus doodde. |

Eine Anlage aus einem beliebigen Material, die aus einer Anzahl miteinander in Verbindung stehender Durchgänge konzipiert ist und bei der die Durchgänge in einer verwirrenden Komplexität angeordnet sind, wodurch es schwierig bis unmöglich ist, ohne Hilfe hinauszufinden. Der Begriff stammt von so genannten Bauten der klassischen Antike ab, möglicherweise abgeleitet von "labrys" (griech. für "Doppelaxt" oder "Ort der Doppeläxte"), da die Bauten mit dem Zeichen der Doppelaxt gekennzeichnet waren. Die früheste Verwendung des Begriffs ist in der Regel mit dem mythischen Labyrinth von Knossos, Kreta, in der Theseus den Minotaurus tötete, verbunden. |
