Note: The Miocene is the fourth epoch of the Tertiary period, or the second of the more recently designated Neogene, following Oligocene and preceding Pliocene. It extends from about 23 million to 5 million years ago. The epoch is marked by the expansion of grasslands and the development of modern grazing mammals.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Vierde tijdvak van het tertiair, ofwel het eerste tijdvak van het meer recent gebruikte neogeen. Het kwam na het oligoceen en vóór het plioceen, en duurde van ongeveer 23 miljoen tot 5 miljoen jaar geleden. In deze tijd verspreidden de graslanden zich en ontwikkelden zich de moderne grazende zoogdieren.
