Note: On the geologic time scale the third epoch of the Tertiary period, following Eocene and preceding Miocene, or the first period of more recently designated Paleogene. It extends from about 34 million to 22 million years ago. The epoch is marked by the further development of mammals. The name Oligocene refers to the relatively few moder animals originating during the epoch.

| Dutch ..... Op de geologische tijdschaal het derde tijdvak van de tertiaire periode, ofwel van het meer recent gebruikte paleogeen. Het kwam na het eoceen en vóór het mioceen, en duurde van ongeveer 34 miljoen tot 22 miljoen jaar geleden. In deze tijd ontwikkelden de zoogdieren zich verder. De naam oligoceen verwijst naar het relatief lage aantal moderne dieren dat zijn oorsprong heeft in dit tijdvak. |
