Note: Small to medium-sized deciduous tree that originated in China and cultivated in warmer climates throughout the world. The scientific name reflects that fact that Europeans formerly thought that the plant was native to Persia. Like other fruit trees from the rose family, peach trees exudes a water soluble gum from damaged locations on its truck and branches. The fruit has yellow or whitish flesh, a delicate aroma, and a skin that is either velvety (peaches) or smooth (nectarines) in different cultivars.
