Note: Genus containing over 400 species of flowering shrubs and trees, including the cultivated almond, peach, plum, cherry, and apricot. Some classifications separate peaches, almonds, and flowering almonds into the separate genus Amygdalus. However, a recent DNA study concluded that Prunus is monophyletic and is descended from one Eurasian ancestor. The earliest known fossil Prunus dates from the middle Eocene of the Princeton Chert of British Columbia.

| Dutch ..... Genus van meer dan 400 soorten bloeiende struiken en bomen, waaronder de amandelboom, perzikboom, pruimenboom, kersenboom en abrikozenboom. In sommige classificaties zijn perzikbomen, amandelbomen en bloeiende amandelbomen (Prunus japonica) in het aparte genus Amygdalus opgenomen. Een recent DNA-onderzoek heeft echter uitgewezen dat Prunus monofyletisch is en afkomstig is van één Europees-Aziatische voorouder. De oudste fossielen van soorten uit Prunus zijn gevonden in The Princeton Chert in de Canadese provincie British Columbia en dateren uit het midden van het eoceen. |
