Note: On the geologic time scale, oldest of five epochs of the Tertiary period, or the last of the more recently designated Paleogene period of the Cenozoic era. The Paleocene extends from about 65 million to 55 million years ago. It followed the Cretaceous period and preceded the Eocene epoch. It is marked by the rapid proliferation and evolution of mammals, including the first primates, and by the formation of the Rocky Mountains.

| Dutch ..... Op de geologische tijdschaal de oudste van de vijf tijdvakken van het tertiair, ofwel het eerste tijdvak van het meer recent gebruikte paleogeen, binnen het cenozoïcum. Het paleoceen duurde van ongeveer 65 miljoen tot 55 miljoen jaar geleden. Het volgde op het einde van de vorige periode, het krijt, en werd gevolgd door het tijdvak eoceen. In deze tijd vond een snelle verspreiding en evolutie plaats onder de zoogdieren, waaronder de eerste primaten, en werden de Rocky Mountains gevormd. |
