Note: Family containing 16 genera and around 635 species of herbs and shrubs, native primarily to temperate and subtropical regions. Members typically have 6-segmented flowers and 3-chambered capsular fruits, occasionally berries. The leaves usually have parallel veins and are clustered at the base of the plant but may alternate along the stem or be arranged in whorls. Most species have an underground storage structure, such as a bulb.

Dutch ..... Familie die 16 genera en circa 635 soorten kruiden en heesters omvat, die hoofdzakelijk in gematigde en subtropische gebieden inheems zijn. Ze dragen meestal bloemen met zes segmenten en doosvruchten met drie kamers, en soms bessen. De bladeren hebben meestal evenwijdig lopende aderen en zijn groepsgewijs gerangschikt aan de basis van de plant, hoewel ze ook afwisselend langs de stam of kransgewijs voorkomen. De meeste soorten hebben een ondergrondse opslagstructuur, bijvoorbeeld in de vorm van een bol.
