Note: The maintenance of objects as closely as possible to their original condition through appropriate environmentally controlled collection maintenance, repair, and physical treatment. Refers to actions taken to prevent further changes or deterioration in objects, sites, or structures. When such actions are taken on buildings or other structures specifically for cultural, aesthetic, or historic reasons, see "historic preservation." For changes that return an object or structure to a state of historical correctness, see "restoration (process)." For actions taken to return to sound condition an already deteriorated structure, see "rehabilitating." For the activity of keeping people and things safe from harm or deterioration generally, see "protection." More generally, for the treatment, preventive care, and research directed toward the long-term safekeeping of cultural and natural heritage, see "conservation."

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指為防止物件、地點或結構進一步出現改變或惡化而採取之行動，藉由適當的藏品維護環境控制、修復或物理處理，使物件狀況盡可能接近其原始狀態。若專為文化、美學或歷史因素而於建築或其他結構上採取此類行動，則用「歷史維護」一詞。若指因改變而使某物件或結構回復至原本應有之狀態，則用「修復（過程）」。若指採取行動讓已衰敗之結構回復至健全狀態，則用「恢復」。一般而言，若指避免人員與物品遭受傷害或防止衰敗的活動，則用「保護」。若指為了長期保護文化與自然遺產所作之處理、預防與研究，則多用「保存」一詞。

| Dutch ..... Duidt activiteiten aan die worden ondernomen om verdere verandering of verslechtering van voorwerpen, locaties of bouwwerken te voorkomen. Gebruik 'monumentenzorg' als zulke activiteiten worden ondernomen voor gebouwen of andere bouwwerken uit specifiek culturele, esthetische of historische overwegingen. Gebruik 'restauratie' als de veranderingen een voorwerp of bouwwerk weer in historisch correcte staat terugbrengen. Gebruik 'rehabiliteren' voor activiteiten die ondernomen worden om een reeds in slechte staat verkerend bouwwerk weer in goede staat te brengen. Gebruik 'beschermen' voor het beveiligen van mensen en objecten tegen letsel of schade in algemene zin. Gebruik, nog algemener, 'milieubeheer' voor de behandeling, voorzorgsmaatregelen en research gericht op het veilig stellen van cultureel en natuurlijk erfgoed op de lange termijn. |

Cuando se toman tales acciones específicamente en edificios u otras estructuras por razones culturales, estéticas, o históricas, use "preservación histórica". Cuando los cambios devuelven a un objeto o estructura a un estado de exactitud histórica, use "restauración (proceso)". Para acciones tomadas para restituir a un buen estado una ya deteriorada estructura, use "rehabilitación". Para la actividad de mantener a la gente y cosas seguras del dolor o deterioro, generalmente, usar "protección". Más general, para el tratamiento, cuidado preventivo e investigación dirigido hacia la perduración en el tiempo a largo plazo del patrimonio cultural o natural, use "conservaciòn". |
