Note: Large group containing between 5,000 and 10,000 species, depending upon the classification, of mostly multicellular, marine algae, including many notable seaweeds and coralline algae. They are characterized by having eukaryotic cells without flagella and centrioles, using floridean starch as food reserve, having phycobiliproteins as accessory red pigments, lacking external endoplasmic reticulum, and using sexual reproduction.

| Dutch ..... Grote groep met tussen de 5000 en 10.000 soorten, afhankelijk van de classificatie, van voornamelijk meercellige zeealgen, waaronder veel opvallende zeewieren en koraalalgen. Ze hebben eukaryotische cellen zonder flagellen of centriolen en maken zetmeel aan als voedselreserve. Daarnaast produceren ze phycobiliproteïnen als extra rode pigmenten. Ze hebben geen extern endoplasmatisch reticulum en planten zich seksueel voort. |
