Genus van ongeveer twintig soorten grote bomen die voorkomen in de tropische gebieden van Mexico, Midden-Amerika, Zuid-Amerika, de Bahama's, Belize, het Caraïbische gebied, West-Afrika en Zuidoost-Azië. Voorheen werd dit genus ondergebracht in de nu niet meer gebruikte familie Bombacaceae, maar tegenwoordig deelt men het in bij de familie Malvales, onderfamilie Bombacoideae. |
