Note: Clade of woody plants intermediate between ferns and gymnosperms comprising the Devonian genus Archaeopteris. Like the true gymnosperms, they commonly had secondary growth of their vascular tissues (i.e. they produced wood), and some grew to be tall trees. However, unlike true gymnosperms, they did not produce seeds, but rather released their spores as do ferns. Two major groups of progymnosperms are recognized, the Archaeopteridales and Aneurophytales. A third group, the Protopityales is sometimes recognized, but it is poorly known, and so its relationship to other plants is unclear.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 介於蕨類與組成泥盆紀古羊齒屬的裸子植物之間的分枝木本植物。如同真正的裸子植物，此類植物普遍有次生維管束組織（亦即此類植物產生木材），且有些會長成高大的樹。然而，不同於裸子植物，前裸子植物不繁殖種子，而是像蕨類一樣釋放孢子。前裸子植物有兩個被認可的類群: 古羊齒目跟無脈樹目。第三類群是原髓蕨目，有時會被認可但較不知名，與其它植物的關係亦仍未明。 |
| Dutch ..... Clade van houtige planten die tussen die van varens en gymnospermen (naaktzadige planten) inzit en het genus Archaeopteris uit het Devoon omvat. Zoals bij de echte gymnospermen was er bij hen gewoonlijk sprake van secundaire groei van hun vaatweefsel (dat wil zeggen, ze produceerden hout) en sommige soorten waren grote bomen. In tegenstelling tot echte gymnospermen produceerden ze evenwel geen zaadjes maar sporen, net als varens. Men erkent twee grote groepen progymnospermen: de Archaeopteridales en Aneurophytales. Een derde groep, de Protopityales, worden soms erkend, maar is slecht bekend, waardoor de relatie met andere planten onduidelijk is. |
