Note: Formerly classed as a species of hibiscus, now assigned to the genus Abelmoschus: an edible leafy green malvaceous plant closely related to okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). It is native to tropical Africa, Asia and northern Australia. In cooking, its seedpods are fried or used to thicken soups and stews. The roots of Abelmoschus manihot are used for cordage and are also the source of a mucilaginous substance used as a dispersion aid in traditional papermaking in East Asia.

| Dutch ..... Een eetbare, bladgroene plant uit de kaasjeskruidfamilie die nauw verwant is aan okra (Abelmoschus esculentus); werd voorheen geclassificeerd als hibiscus, maar wordt nu ingedeeld in het geslacht Abelmoschus. Inheems in tropisch Afrika, Azië en Noord-Australië. De peulen van de plant worden in het koken gebruikt als bindmiddel voor soepen en stoofschotels, of ze worden zelf gebakken. De wortels worden gebruikt voor touwwerk en zijn tevens de bron van een slijmerige substantie die als hulpmiddel voor dispersie wordt gebruikt in de traditionele papierproductie in Oost-Azië. |
