Note: Species of tree found in moist areas of the eastern U.S. from Maine south to the Gulf Coast and westward to Oklahoma. Its wood is light and soft, but tough. The black gum is sometimes grown as an ornamental, prized for brilliant scarlet autumnal foliage. The bark dye has good washfastness and fair lightfastness.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Boomsoort die voorkomt in vochtige gebieden in het oosten van de VS, van de staat Maine in het noorden tot de kust van de Mexicaanse golf in het zuiden en de staat Oklahoma in het westen. Het hout is licht en zacht, maar sterk. Deze boom wordt soms als sierboom gekweekt. In de herfst krijgen de bladeren een schitterende scharlakenrode kleur. De kleurstof in de schors heeft een goede kleurvastheid voor wassen en een redelijke kleurvastheid voor blootstelling aan licht.
