Note: Species of small to medium-sized chestnut originally native to Japan and South Korea, but now widely cultivated in eastern China and Taiwan. It is an important tree in Japan for its sweet, edible nuts, known in various cultivars that have been selected for large nut size. It is resistant to chestnut blight that devastated the American chestnut; it has been used in the development of disease-resistant hybrids. |

Dutch ..... Kleine tot middelgrote kastanje die oorspronkelijk inheems was in Japan en Zuid-Korea, maar tegenwoordig op grote schaal wordt gekweekt in Taiwan en het oosten van China. In Japan is het een belangrijke boom vanwege zijn zoete, eetbare kastanjes. Er zijn verschillende cultivars die zijn geselecteerd om grote vruchten te produceren. De soort is resistent tegen kastanjekanker, de schimmel die de Amerikaanse kastanje bijna uitroeide. De Japanse kastanje heeft men gebruikt om kruisingen te kweken die resistent zijn tegen deze boomziekte. |
