Note: Species of large deciduous tree up to 35 meters in height, native to eastern North America, from Nova Scotia to Texas, having a pale reddish-brown timber that is hard, tough, fine-grained, and used for furniture and other purposes. The bark is smooth and gray. Leaves are simple with veins and toothed edges. Fruit comprises a large husk containing 2 shiny brown edible nuts. The wood is acidic, pinkish brown in color with dark brown rays.

| Dutch ..... Grote loofboomsoort die 35 meter hoog kan worden, inheems in het oosten van Noord-Amerika, in het gebied van Nova Scotia tot Texas. Het hout is licht roodachtig bruin, hard en onbuigzaam, heeft een rechte nerf en wordt gebruikt voor meubels en andere doeleinden. De schors is glad en grijs. De bladeren zijn eenvoudig met aderen en getande randen. De vrucht bestaat uit een grote schil met twee glanzende bruine eetbare noten. Het hout is zuur, rozeachtig bruin van kleur met donkerbruine strepen. |
