Note: Genus containing about 30 species of ornamental shrubs and trees that are primarily north temperate in distribution, but range south through the Andes to about latitude 20 degrees S. It is only in the Americas that members of the family extend along the mountains into the Southern Hemisphere. An alder may be distinguished from a birch by its usually stalked winter buds and by cones that remain on the branches after the small, winged nutlets are released. The scaly bark is grayish brown in some species and almost white in others. The oval leaves are alternate, serrate, and often shallowly lobed; sticky on unfolding but glossy when mature, they fall without changing colour. Male and female flowers are borne in separate catkins on the same tree; they form during the summer and usually blossom the following spring before the leaves open.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 生物分類學上包含約30種觀賞性灌木和喬木的一個屬，主要分布於北溫帶區，但可往南沿著安地斯山脈延伸至南緯20度的地區，不過此現象僅出現於美洲地區。赤楊與樺樹之不同處在於其冬天萌發之帶柄嫩芽；此外，在其有翅果仁爆開後，毬果仍會留在樹枝上。有些赤楊品種的鱗狀樹皮為灰棕色，其他則幾乎皆為白色；其葉片為橢圓形互生葉，邊緣有鋸齒，通常有淺裂痕，初展開時具黏性，成熟後有光澤，落葉時顏色不變；赤楊之花朵乃雌雄同株，但不同花序，花苞在夏天長出，一般會在次年春天葉子展開前綻放。 |
| Dutch ..... Genus dat uit circa 20 soorten sierheesters en bomen bestaat. Het verspreidingsgebied beperkt zich hoofdzakelijk tot gematigde streken in het noordelijk halfrond, maar komen in het zuidelijk halfrond voor in de gehele Andes tot circa de 20ste breedtegraad. Alleen op het Amerikaanse continent worden leden van deze familie langs gebergten tot op het zuidelijk halfrond aangetroffen. De els onderscheidt zich van de berk doordat hij vaak gesteelde winterknoppen heeft en door de kegels (elzenproppen) die op de tak blijven zitten nadat ze de kleine, gevleugelde noten hebben laten vallen. De schubachtige schors is bij sommige soorten grijsbruin van kleur, terwijl hij bij andere soorten bijna wit is. De ovale bladeren zijn afwisselend geplaatst en hebben vaak ondiepe lobben; ze zijn kleverig wanneer ze zich ontvouwen en glanzend wanneer ze rijp zijn, en vallen zonder van kleur te veranderen. Mannelijke en vrouwelijke bloemen bevinden zich in afzonderlijke katjes op dezelfde boom. Ze ontstaan in de zomer en bloeien doorgaans in het volgende voorjaar, voordat de bladeren opengaan. |
