Note: Genus containing around 100 species of shrubs and trees native to temperate areas in the Northern Hemisphere, having dark bark, often bearing spines, and dark green, oval leaves. Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Genus dat circa 100 soorten heesters en bomen omvat die voorkomen in de gematigde temperatuurzones van het noordelijk halfrond. De schors heeft een donkere kleur en is vaak voorzien van stekels, en de bladeren zijn donkergroen en ovaal. Veel soorten hebben een schors waaruit een gele kleurstof wordt gewonnen, terwijl de kleine zwarte vruchten als laxeermiddel worden gebruikt.
