Note: Scale insect from which the crimson colorant cochineal is derived. It is a primarily sessile parasite native to tropical and subtropical South America and Mexico, preferring cacti from the genus Opuntia. It produces carminic acid, which deters predation. This substance is extracted from the bodies of dry females and eggs; the colorant was usually used as a red solution or precipitated to make carmine, an aluminum or aluminum-tin lake. Secretions of sticky, weblike strands of filamentous wax make the colonies' infestations on the cacti appear as furry white patches.

| Dutch ..... Schildinsect waaruit het helderrode pigment karmijn wordt gewonnen. Deze overwegend sessiele parasiet, die van nature voorkomt in de tropische en subtropische delen van Zuid-Amerika en Mexico, heeft een voorkeur voor cactussen van het genus Opuntia. Het insect produceert karmijnzuur, wat potentiële belagers afschrikt. Deze stof wordt gewonnen uit het lijf van gedroogde vrouwtjes en eitjes. De kleurstof werd doorgaans als rode oplossing gebruikt of neergeslagen voor de vervaardiging van karmijn, een pigment met aluminium of aluminium en tin. De luizenkolonies geven een kleverige afscheiding van webachtige wasvezels af, zichtbaar als wollig-witte vlokken op de cactus. |
