Specifically, typically refers to relatively large public parks or grounds laid out expressly for the interment of the dead, and not being the yard of any church. Originally the term was derived from the Latin "cœmeterium," referring to Roman underground cemeteries or catacombs.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... In het algemeen, terreinen die worden gebruikt om overledenen te begraven of in tomben te plaatsen. Meer specifiek verwijst dit naar relatief grote openbare parken of terreinen die uitdrukkelijk voor teraardebestelling van doden bestemd zijn en die niet bij een kerk horen. 
German ..... In der Regel verwendet um Areale für die Beerdigung oder Bestattung zu bezeichnen. Der Begriff bezieht sich typischerweise auf relativ große, öffentliche Parkanlagen oder Flächen, die ausdrücklich für die Bestattung der Toten angelegt wurden und nicht auf die Bestattungsflächen rund um Kirchen.
